Thirties are really the prime of your life. Most people in their forties and older will look back at this age and think: I looked my best in my thirties. Of course, it doesn’t have to be that way. Especially if you are just about to turn 30, you still have plenty of time to prevent and even reverse some of the damage that may have happened in your teens or twenties, before the damage becomes visible in your forties and beyond.

Along with a cleanser that leaves your skin feeling clean without feeling stripped and tight, like any one of the Epionce cleansers, begin topical application of an anti-inflammatory/antioxidant product to help increase cell turnover and smooth skin texture. This can be found in any one of the Epionce Lytics, or in MelanoLyte Tx (if you are dealing with any unwanted pigmentation). Lytics are especially helpful if you still suffer from adult acne breakouts, to help clear blemishes without over-drying your skin.

Continue using hydrating products that protect against inflammatory factors while strengthening the skin barrier, such as any one of the Epionce Renewal facial products specifically for your skin type (dry; normal/combination; oily/problem). Renewal Eye Cream is also wonderful for all skin types who need a little extra help around the delicate eye area.

Also, ask your favorite skin care expert about:

Professional-strength exfoliation or mask treatments (every 6-12 weeks).

Light therapy (LED) treatments for treating redness in the skin, acne, lightening pigment with no downtime, anti-aging (helps to decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles)

Pulsed light (IPL) treatments to help diminish redness, lighten sun damage, stimulate collagen

You probably have figured out by now that I am a huge fan of SIMPLE. The easier your routine is to follow twice a day (or at least once a day), the more likely you are to follow it. The longer you follow a simple routine – the better chance you have of preventing future damage – particularly wearing daily Epionce broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Congratulations! You’ve made it out of the teenage years and you are well on your way to adulthood.

Now is the time that your skin cell turnover it at its peak – every 28 to 32 days, fresh healthy cells are making their way to the skin surface. And if you escaped your teens without experiencing acne breakouts, they may start popping up now, especially around the jawline, chin and neck area.

For the 20’s age group, it helps to develop good habits now if you didn’t start in your teens. Remember to keep skin care simple and easy to follow on a daily basis.

Here are some rules to remember during your 20’s:

The number ONE anti-aging/anti-wrinkle product you can use on your skin every day that you will thank me for recommending 20 to 30 years from now is sunscreen. Remember 80-90% of our visible aging is caused by sun exposure. By the time you’ve turned 20, you’ve only received about 25% of your lifetime sun exposure – so there is still plenty of time to keep your skin protected. Start NOW with Epionce Ultra Shield Lotion SPF 50 (when outside most of the day, or when swimming) or Active Shield Lotion SPF 30 (when you are inside most of the day).

Figure out a routine that works best for you right now, and follow it. Keep it simple, not complicated. Your basic Epionce routine starts with a cleanser for skin type; Lytic for skin type and Renewal Facial product for skin type. Repeat twice a day if you can.

Professional exfoliation treatments such as microdermabrasion or light chemical peels can keep your skin looking fresh and smooth, or help to clear acne break outs. Talk to an experienced esthetician about a yearly series, from 3 to 6 treatments per year.

If you are having trouble with acne, one option to consider before trying prescription therapy is LED light therapy. Combining peels with LED has been very successful for many who are seeking an alternative to harsh topical prescriptions or oral medications.

Before your doctor recommends hormone therapy (birth control pills) for acne, make sure the acne you are experiencing is hormonally related. Birth control pills will not help to clear non-hormonal acne break outs.

Again, keep your routine simple and please don’t forget to wear your Epionce sunscreen every day.

For those who believe they have naturally “healthy” skin, it still requires a bit of work. What’s also true is that “unhealthy” skin may not require a whole lot more work than healthy skin.

Your skin cells are on a regular reproduction cycle that happens every 28-32 days. During the teens and twenties, your skin cells are reproducing at their optimum rate. Teenagers, in particular, are vulnerable to skin problems because they are also experiencing many hormonal changes in their bodies during these years. For this age group, if you can develop good habits at an early age, you may be able to avoid serious issues with acne and other troubling skin conditions.

For my own teens as well as others, I suggest the following basic skincare rules to follow:

TRY TO STAY CONSISTENT. It helps to have a very simple routine: Cleanser, toner or treatment product, sunscreen (AM daily); or cleanser, toner or treatment product, barrier repairing product (PM daily). If someone is trying to talk you into any more than three steps, consider what is realistically easiest for you to do on a daily basis. And stop switching products every couple of weeks if you think something isn’t working. Sometimes it takes time for your skin to adjust to a new product or routine.

DON’T PICK! We may have all heard this from our parents, but I am repeating it here: Keep your hands off your face. And for moms out there like my mom was with me: Keep your hands off your kid’s face. Nothing spreads acne and other nasty bacteria more than touching your face with your bacteria-laden hands. Picking will drive bacteria further into the follicle and could create more irritation and inflammation. Picking may also lead to permanent scarring.

MORE IS NOT BETTER! BE NICE TO YOUR SKIN! Along the lines of a consistent routine, you need to keep it simple. Slamming your face with a benzoyl-peroxide (BPO) cleanser, a BPO toner, and a BPO treatment product is a lot of BPO. BPO can trigger inflammation and free radical action in the skin, which could actually cause more damage in the long run. Stick with active, yet gentle, Epionce products with anti-inflammatory ingredients like azelaic acid and salicylic acid.

STAY AWAY FROM TANNING BEDS! I cannot emphasize this point enough. In fact, I hope you never see the inside of a tanning bed. Just one time in a tanning bed increases your chances of melanoma skin cancer (the deadliest form) by 50%.

DON’T SMOKE! Unless you want to look old and ugly. Smoking is not cool, no matter what age you are. Not only is smoking bad for your overall health, it decreases oxygen levels in your skin and causes skin congestion. Nicotine addiction is one of the hardest habits to break – don’t even get started.

Finally, know when to consult a professional when your skin is bothering you. If you are suffering from acne as a teen, you need to see a licensed esthetician or a dermatologist if your skin is very inflamed (red) with more than 25 open and closed comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), and papules, pustules or cysts (the ones you want to squeeze).

Caring for your skin should become an easy habit, like brushing your teeth twice a day. The earlier you begin your skincare routine, the easier it will be for you to maintain your healthy skin.

Let’s face it, most of us didn’t wear sunscreen on a regular basis 20 or 30 years ago … and our skin is showing the damage today. You have tried to accept it, but you just can’t see yourself as the person with sagging skin or deep wrinkles reflected in the mirror. The time has come to make a change – will you go subtle, or opt for something more dramatic?

When you have made the decision to have facial plastic surgery, it is important that you do the following before going under the knife:
• Research, research, research! Otolaryngologists and oral maxillofacial specialists have extensive knowledge of the neck area and above. Find a physician who is board-certified in facial plastic surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, or who has FACS behind the MD (example: John Surgeon, MD, FACS). Ask for and contact references.
• Stop smoking! Smoking makes you look older anyway, and greatly affects the healing process.
• Plan to prepare your skin for healing prior to surgery – the healthier your skin is, the better it will heal.
• After surgery, follow post-care instructions to the letter.

Because the two main focuses of Epionce include calming damaging inflammatory factors while building healthy skin barrier strength, Epionce makes an ideal home care regimen to prepare the skin prior to plastic surgery. Start your home care plan at least 6 to 12 weeks prior to surgery — the earlier, the better. Include MelanoLyte Tx twice a day instead of Lytic if you are prone to hyperpigmentation. Ask your skin professional about an Epionce Peel System series to help increase collagen and elastin synthesis, correct skin imperfections, and prepare your skin for optimal healing post-surgery.

Post-plastic surgery or deeper laser resurfacing procedures are also the best times to incorporate the Intense Skin Rehab System while you are recovering, to help restore healthy skin barrier function and soothe sensitive skin. Then after you’ve healed, continue using Epionce consistently at home to help you maintain your radiant, post-surgery glow.

The skin on our body below the chin is very different from the skin on our face. Because we are less likely to protect these areas, as we grow older, the neck, décolletage and hands will often give away our age before our face does.

The skin on the neck and décolletage area tends to be much thinner than on the rest of our bodies. Factors such as gravity, sun exposure and other external elements leave these areas with unwanted pigmentation, wrinkles and sagging skin. On other parts of the body, the lowest quantity of lipids in the skin are found on the palms, soles, lower legs, knees and elbows. In these areas there is greater susceptibility to dehydration, which results in increased skin scaling.

Greater damage occurs on body skin when an unhealthy skin barrier is not fully protected against recurring chronic inflammatory factors. It can take up to two decades or longer to see the damage in your skin – so even if you don’t see anything now, it may appear later.

The number ONE anti-aging product you should be incorporating is sunscreen – twenty years ago, on a daily basis! But if you didn’t wear sunscreen then, you can still start this healthy habit now to prevent future damage – and even reverse some of the past damage. Start with Epionce Ultra Shield Lotion SPF 50 with broad spectrum zinc oxide 10.1%.

Epionce Renewal-category Products offer superior anti-inflammatory and barrier repairing properties. For skin on the hands (or feet), try Restorative Hand Cream, which is offered at a very special introductory price as part of our Mother’s Day Promotion until May 11. The skin on your neck and décolletage will appreciate the ultra-hydrating and repairing powers of Intensive Nourishing Cream. And for the parts of the skin on the body that need a daily lipid boost, apply Renewal Enriched Body Lotion – or Extreme Barrier Cream for extra-emollient hydration.

Today, I thought I’d take a few minutes to talk about one of my favorite pieces of skin care: Cleanser. It’s also one of the most important parts, since the cleansing step is what gets your skin surface fresh and new, ready for your next treatment steps.

Epionce cleansers are formulated to remove dirt, oil, makeup and dead skin cells without causing disruption to the skin’s natural protective barrier lipids – unlike many traditional bar soaps or other harsh cleansers.

Because they do not damage the skin barrier, Epionce Cleansers are also great for sensitive skin types, or those who suffer from scaly skin diseases such as eczema or psoriasis. Dr. Thornfeldt created each cleanser to contain gentle surfactants that leave your skin feeling fresh and clean, but not stripped and raw. They are also sulfate-free, and help to prepare the skin prior to the use of any additional products.

There’s an Epionce cleanser suitable to any skin type: Milky Lotion Cleanser is a non-foaming creamy cleanser that is made for dry/sensitive skin. Gentle Foaming Cleanser is a creamy, foaming formula that is made for normal to combination skin (my secret: it suits anyone who loves a great foaming cleanser). Lytic Gel Cleanser is perfect for oily to acne-prone skin and especially helpful for those who suffer with psoriasis or atopic dermatitis (another insider secret: men really love Lytic Gel Cleanser).

Lytic Gel Cleanser had me at “Hello” the first time I tried Epionce, and I can’t imagine ever using anything different … What’s your favorite Epionce cleanser?

Did you know? After winter’s gray skies, spring is associated with increased ultra violet light (UVL). Your skin needs protection even as the seasons change.

In the plant kingdom, the increase of UVL stimulates growth … and in humans with a predisposition to certain skin diseases and conditions, this can cause their skin to flare. The foundation of prevention and treatment for the flaring of skins conditions during the spring consists of optimizing skin barrier function while reversing and preventing inflammation. Proper use of sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher is critically important. Additionally wearing photoprotective clothing, including tightly woven hats with at least a 4-inch brim, markedly reduces UVL exposure and the risk of activating these diseases.

How Epionce Can Help:
Using your Epionce home regimen will help optimize barrier function and reverse and prevent damaging inflammation.

Epionce cleansers are pH-balanced to clean skin without disrupting the delicate acid mantle, especially when dealing with irritating skin conditions. Rebalancing Clarifier contains botanical formulas to help soothe and hydrate itchy, sensitive skin.
