Tips to Enjoy the Sun Safely

May 6, 2022

In observance of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, here are some of our favorite tips to enjoy the sun safely:

Wear Protective Clothing

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, clothing can provide a great barrier against the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. It’s a good idea to keep a cool, breathable long-sleeved shirt, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat handy if you are heading outdoors. The Skin Cancer Foundation also suggests looking for clothing options that have a UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) label and says that, “A shirt labeled UPF 50, for example, allows just 1/50th of the UV radiation to reach your skin.”

Seek Shade

The sun is at its peak from about 10:00am to 2:00pm. Seek shade during this time, if possible. The American Academy of Dermatology says, “If your shadow is shorter than you are, seek shade.”

Apply (and Reapply) Sunscreen

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and also recommends reapplying at least every two hours, or more frequently after swimming or sweating.

We’re very proud to say that Daily Shield Tinted SPF 50 Sunscreen has earned the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation for daily use. When applied properly, and consistently, both products provide broad-spectrum SPF 50 UV protection.

Protect Yourself from Every Angle

UV exposure can come from every angle, so make sure to apply your SPF daily, even when you don’t think you need it! Outside, water, sand, and snow can reflect UV rays and increase your risk of sunburn. Even indoors, windows, doors, and skylights can allow UVA & UVB rays to reach your skin.

Get Checked

Early detection is key. Schedule an annual check-up with a board-certified dermatologist, and perform regular self-exams.
